Accessible Knossos Palace
The Palace of Knossos is the largest and most iconic archaeological site of the ancient Minoan civilization, dating back over 3,500 years. Located just outside Heraklion, this sprawling complex is often associated with the myth of the Labyrinth and King Minos, blending history with legend. The palace features an intricate layout of courtyards, grand staircases, ceremonial rooms, and vividly restored frescoes that reflect the sophistication and artistic flair of Minoan culture. Once a political, economic, and religious center, Knossos offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into one of Europe’s earliest advanced civilizations, set against the backdrop of Crete’s rich landscape and heritage.
Accessibility of the site
Fair
The Knossos Palace offers partial accessibility for visitors with mobility limitations, allowing access to some of its most iconic areas while presenting certain challenges due to its ancient layout. Wheelchair users can navigate key sections of the site via paved pathways leading to the central court and main highlights, with facilities such as accessible toilets, designated parking, and some ramp access available near the entrance.
However, as a historic ruin with uneven terrain, not all areas are accessible—many interior spaces, upper levels, and narrower passages remain difficult or impossible to reach due to stairs, slopes, and irregular surfaces. Visitors should also be aware that the site can be crowded, noisy, and physically demanding, which may affect those with sensory sensitivities or limited mobility
Online booking even with one hour diffference to avoid lines at the entrance. Also on site booking is possible.
